I had a new "line of business" - a book I'd written that was being managed as a new corporation - and I was getting worried that I didn't know what I didn't know.  I asked friends for recommendations and was referred to Sunny Widerman of Personal Tax Advisors.  I paid for a consultation and this was the best value for money spent this year (plus I have a half hour of consultation left!):
1. I checked some things I had been doing with a rental property and my sole proprietorship, giving me comfort I'm OK and some improvements I could undertake.
2. I asked about steps I might take as I consider transferring my share in a property to my niece and feel I now have a direction to start having discussions with family and revising my will.
3. We went into detail about my new "corporation" for my book, including differences as compared to a sole proprietorship or partnership and how I can set myself up right from the start.
4. I asked about the value of accounting software (excel had served me well up 'til now) and what she would recommend.

She then followed up in writing with a succinct, easy-to-use summary of the key points of our discussion.  She tailored our call to my needs rather than telling me things I already knew. She said when she wasn't sure of something and then checked and confirmed the answer.  I've had poor experiences with two tax accountants on different issues - Sunny is the opposite: proof positive of someone who meets the CPA Code of Professional Conduct.  I recommend her highly based on my experience (in fact, have already given her name to a friend!).
