As of July 2025, CRA introduced new security measures and processes for authorizing representatives (e.g., your friendly neighbourhood tax advisor) on your CRA account. Authorization allows another person or firm to view and in some cases make changes or requests with regard to your CRA account. The process is most straightforward if you already have access to your online account (My Account), but there are ways to do it even if you yourself are currently locked out.
Authorizing if you already have access to your My Account
To authorize a representative via your CRA My Account, you need to log in, navigate to the “Profile” section, and then locate the “Authorized representatives” area. From there, you can add a new representative or manage existing ones.
Steps to Authorize a Representative:
- Sign in to your CRA My Account:Use your NetServ or CRA sign-in credentials to access your account.
- Navigate to Profile:Locate the “Profile” section, often found in the navigation menu on the left or via a profile link on the top right.
- Access Authorized Representatives:Look for the “Authorized representatives” section within the Profile area. You might see options like “Add representative” or “Manage authorized representatives”.
- Add a Representative:If you’re adding a new representative, click the “Add” or similar button.
- Enter Representative Details:You’ll need to enter the representative’s RepID, Group ID, or Business Number (BN). To authorize us, enter the Group ID provided by your advisor here at Bonaventure Personal Tax Advisors.
- Authorization Level 1 or Level 2: To give full access for your tax advisor to work on your tax files and communicate with CRA on your behalf, grant us Level 2 access. Level 1 will allow us to view data but not to make changes or requests on your behalf.
- Confirm and Submit: Review the information and confirm the authorization. Once authorized, you can view, modify, or delete the representative’s authorization at any time.
If you don’t have access to My Account yet
You can register for My Account by following the instructions here. Once you’re in, you can follow the instructions above for giving us access to your account.
If you can’t access your online CRA account (My Account)
If you don’t have access to your own online account you can still grant access to your tax accounts to your advisor or other representative.
Granting offline access
One option is to grant limited, offline access (phone only). This is not ideal, as it must be done by mail and is therefore slow. Moreover it means we can only access your information by calling CRA, which can mean delays as we need to set aside time to be put on hold while we wait for an agent. However it can be a start.
Grant offline access by completing and submitting form AUT-01 Authorize a Representative for Offline Access. This kind of access does not allow us to access your online account (My Account); however it allows us to call CRA and speak to an agent about your confidential tax information. To give full access for your tax advisor to work on your tax files and communicate with CRA on your behalf, grant us Level 2 access. Level 1 will allow us to view data but not to make changes or requests on your behalf.
Online access without My Account
Some people can’t register for My Account, either because they’re not comfortable with the technology, or because they’re located outside of Canada. If that’s your situation, we may be able to help. Get in touch.
