Independent artists face a challenging road, as difficult as it is rewarding. But while most artists have a strong inner sense of how to deepen their creative skills, they can sometimes neglect the business and taxes side of things. That’s understandable; whatever led you to your artistic calling, it probably wasn’t a love of spreadsheets.
If your art is your livelihood, however, the fact is you can’t completely ignore the numbers. Not knowing, or not complying with, the demands of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) can be a recipe for disaster that sinks your creative endeavor before it even begins.
