What is My Account?
My Account is the online system CRA uses to give taxpayers access to their tax accounts. Many Canadians rely on CRA My Account to view tax slips, check notices of assessment, and track refunds or benefit payments.
Once you have access, CRA My Account allows you to:
- View Notices of Assessment
- Access tax slips such as T4s and T5s
- Check RRSP and TFSA contribution limits
- Track benefits and credits
- Send and receive secure messages from CRA
Having access to this information can make tax preparation much easier. It’s faster and more convenient than having to call CRA and wait on hold to talk to an agent, and you can get access 24/7.
Getting Locked Out
But recently, some taxpayers have discovered they can no longer log in.
This is often due to updated security measures introduced by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) or because it’s been a few years since you last filed a tax return. Others simply never registered for My Account in the first place and aren’t sure how to get started.
If you’re having trouble accessing your account, or want to set one up, here’s what you need to know.
Why You May Have Lost Access
There are several common reasons people are locked out of their CRA My Account:
Forgotten login credentials
If you’ve forgotten your username or password, you may need to reset them through the CRA login page.
Multi-factor authentication issues
CRA now requires additional identity verification. If your phone number or authentication method has changed, you may need to update it.
Changes to your Sign-In Partner
Some people access My Account through their bank using a “Sign-In Partner,” usually meaning you login via your bank or credit union. If your banking access has changed, this may affect your CRA login.
Too many failed login attempts
Multiple unsuccessful login attempts can temporarily lock your account.
What If You Never Set Up My Account?
If you’ve never registered for CRA My Account, you can still sign up online.
Creating an account allows you to securely access your tax information and receive messages directly from CRA.
You can find step-by-step instructions for both registering for My Account and regaining access here:
